Full Mouth Rehabilitation

What is a full mouth rehabilitation?

When dental problems start to accumulate, the overall function, health, and aesthetics of the teeth can become severely impacted. Often, patients are aware of the overall decline of their oral health by simply smiling less. It is not uncommon that functional problems also start to develop causing jaw pain and headaches or even impacting the ability to properly chew.

A full mouth reconstruction addresses all problems at the same time. The dentist will develop a holistic treatment plan to completely rebuild and rejuvenate your smile.

Who can benefit from a full mouth rehabilitation?

Full mouth rehabilitations are generally recommended for patients who have several oral health problems.

Typically, full mouth rehabilitation is recommended for:

  • Excessively worn dentition due to grinding and clenching
  • Combination of many restorations that require replacement at the same time
  • Worn dentition due to Erosion (Biocorrosion)
  • Replacement of unpleasant restorations due to aesthetic concerns
  • Bite rehabilitation due to TMJ problems

What is Dental Erosion (Biocorrosion)?

A problem we see more often in the recent years is Dental Erosion. It is a condition that severely affects the teeth by an increased contact to acidity. Erosive demineralization is a chemical process characterised by acid dissolution of dental hard tissue, and its etiology is multifactorial.

The main causes of Dental Erosion are:

  • Dietary
  • Regurgitation
  • Environmental
  • Flow of saliva
  • Exposed dentin
  • Idiopathic

Severe cases of dental erosion can require full mouth rehabilitation with the use of ultra-thin veneers.

What are the steps involved in a full mouth rehabilitation?

  1. In-depth consultation It starts with a comprehensive consultation and examination, including
    • X-rays (possibly a 3D CBCT xray)
    • Clinical examination of all hard and soft tissues
    • Functional examination of your jaw
    • Aesthetic evaluation of your facial and smile characteristics
All of your treatment needs and objectives will be discussed with the dentist.
  2. Presentation of a treatment plan In a second appointment a comprehensive treatment plan will be presented and explained to you. Possibly a simulation of the aesthetic outcome will be part of this appointment. All of your questions will be addressed.
  3. Improving Oral Health In the third step we will treat all disease, decay, and damage that has affected your teeth, bone, gum, and body. This step can involve the following procedures: professional cleaning, periodontal treatment, composite fillings, and Invisalign/braces. If you suffer from a bad bite, we will also correct it during this stage. Establishing a healthy foundation is the requirement for building a long-lasting reconstruction in the next step.
  4. Reconstruction This phase of the treatment can require two or multiple visits. Once a healthy foundation is created, the reconstructive phase can start. It is very individual what kind of procedures are performed in this step. Generally, they can include: Crowns, Onlays, Inlays, Bridges, Veneers, Partial Crowns and Implants. Our aim is to be as conservative as possible. We use techniques like ultra-thin veneers and onlays, which don’t require an invasive preparation of your teeth. As opposed to invasive crowns, which were a common procedure in the past. Usually, we would only use crowns, if old crowns need to be replaced.
  5. Maintenance After the full mouth rehabilitation is completed, maintenance of your teeth is very important. Regular checkups and cleanings ensure long lasting restorations.
