Skin cancer is a prevalent condition that affects millions of people worldwide. Early detection of skin cancer can be lifesaving, which is where mole mapping comes in. Mole mapping is a screening technique that utilizes high-resolution digital photography to document and monitor every mole on a person's body, often tracking subtle changes that may indicate the development of skin cancer.
There are three significant types of skin cancers: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Basal cell carcinoma is the most common type, accounting for approximately 80% of all skin cancers. Though it usually does not spread, it can lead to disfigurement if not treated promptly. - Radiation therapy: Radiation therapy may be utilized for cancer treatment, particularly in cases when surgical removal is not possible.
- Topical treatments: Anti-cancer creams can be applied to the skin for low-grade cancers.
- Immunotherapy: Immunotherapy involves the injection of drugs into the body to prompt an immune response and kill off cancerous cells.
The best course of action is to undergo regular skin examinations by qualified dermatologists or skin cancer specialists, particularly in the cases of personal or family history of skin cancer, occupational exposure to the sun, or frequent sun exposure. High-risk patients may benefit from mole mapping to detect small and and early signs of skin cancers.
